Soundtrack to the Big Bang
Published by Jake Allen February 3rd, 2004 in UncategorizedUK and AU papers are reporting on the London college kid who hacked into the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (45 miles west of Chicago, not to be confused with Argonne National Labs, where Top Secret stuff is done, also near Chicago) to store mp3s and divx movies. The kid got 200 hrs of community service, and no jail time.
First of all, there has got to be a safer place to steal mp3 space from. Good grief.
Secondly, even if I did hack into Fermi, I would not waste my time storing mp3s. I would definitely fire up the particle accelerater and get the dark matter flowing! (In fact, I have a free evening . . . hmmmmm.)
Third, the kid probably found about about the cold fusion recently discovered at Fermi which OPEC is desperately trying to keep secret. (Don’t worry, they all know I’m just kidding, Sheik.)
Fermi is one of those places where, despite massive Congressional pork spending, physics is cool. Seriously, science is lots of fun when you can smash atoms (and smaller) together. Not that I know anything about it, however.
Ok, the hack happened over a year ago, but is still funny.
