Linux
Published by Jake Allen September 6th, 2005 in UncategorizedI tried unsuccessfully to run Linspire 5-0 this last night and this morning, and am downloading Xandros now.
I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about Windows Vista, due to arrive in about a year, and how learning Linux could save me a bunch of money when I buy my next computer. I don’t run a lot of DirectX games, and most of what I really use my computer for (web surfing and authoring, downloading media, picture and video editing, word processing, et al) can be accomplished with a free OS. Further, I already like OpenOffice.org more than MS Office. While I do like IE better than Firefox or Opera (I use the feature-heavy Slimbrowser GUI for IE), I could leave it behind for $200+.
Linspire failed me because during the install it kept requiring me to run the command line. My laptop doesn’t have a floppy, and I could not seem to tell the OS that. Sure I could go online and search through forums to find out how to do it step by step, but yuck. I’ll try Xandros tonight or tomorrow (I used Corel a bit in college, which required me to print reams of instructions) and if it works while staying below my threshold of frustration, I’ll let you know.
Madness!
